🏛️ Welcome to Jatindra Rajendra Mahavidyalaya

Jatindra Rajendra Mahavidyalaya, established on Dec. 6, 1986, is a general degree college in Murshidabad district. It offers undergraduate courses in Humanities and Social Science subjects. Formerly the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta and presently the college is affiliated to the University of Kalyani. The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under 2(f) and 12 (B). The college is situated within a small but beautiful campus of 1.87 acres in a small village called Amtala which is in the Nowda Assembly segment of the Berhampore parliamentary constituency in Murshidabad District. The railway station nearest to the college is Beldanga at a distance of 23 kms from the college campus. The college offers courses under humanities and social science faculty comprising eight departments. A variety of teaching and learning techniques are employed to impart knowledge and skills to students. In 2016 the college was awarded “B’' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

From Principal Desk

Murshidabad is historically, geographically and culturally a fertile land situated on the east of the river Ganga in West Bengal. Around the year 1986, the area of Nowda was a green isolated countryside with farming as the main occupation of the people. Rice, mustard and jute cultivation was the source of livelihood of the people of this area. The society was stratified, with education accessible only to the elite class of the village community. The education of the girls of the village was negligible. The population being largely Muslim, education was not encouraged among girls from this minority community who were married early. The social reformation started with the establishment of Amtala High School, a co-educational Institution where post-class VIII girl-students were married early as learning in the same classroom with the boys after adolescence was not encouraged in this conservative community. With this in mind, a girls’ school Annadamoni Balika Vidyalaya was established with the help of a few liberal intellectuals of the neighborhood. Very slowly, education among girls increased and the people of the area realized the necessity of education among all, especially among girls. Gradually there started an awakening among the village community. Simultaneously, there grew a slow fermentation among the village community for having a Higher Education Institute for continuation of the study of meritorious students of the schools of the area. With no college within almost 22 kms around the village of Amtala, the nearest railway station around 23 kms away and local transport being insufficient (only two buses plied up and down between Amtala and Berhampore throughout the day), the need for a college in this locality was felt throughout Nowda, Hariharpara, Karimpur and Tehatta along with Amtala. The college started with about 36 students, surprisingly girl-students comprising one-third of the class strength in 1986. The Board of members was led by Jayanta Biswas and Sudhir Mondal, with the inclusion of educationists and liberal-minded individuals of the local community. Sanjoy Hajra was appointed Teacher-in-Charge and many teachers of neighboring schools taught the students in the college without any remuneration. With halting steps, the college grew in strength and in 1989, the first principal of the college N.M. Khalilullah joined his post and along with a skeletal staff of four full-timers, a few part-timers and non-teaching staff he carried the baton of college education forward. In the present decade, the college has constructed some new buildings for use as classrooms, computer laboratory and ICT room. New subjects have been introduced and faculties have been appointed, computerization of office administration and the library have been completed. The garden and campus grounds have been beautified and are being well maintained. Many other facilities like canteen, girls' common room, guest room, cycle shed have been made available for the students. NSS has been introduced and is working in full swing. Various programs are organized to empower the women of the locality. Jatindra Rajendra Mahavidyalaya is a young institution with great dreams and aspirations and we the college community as a whole, wish to provide the GenY facilities for growth and development as much we can within our limitations of finance and manpower.
